Highland Park Scots Football Advances to State Championship

DALLAS — The Highland Park Scots secured their spot in the UIL Class 5A Division I state championship game Friday night with a commanding 35-14 victory over the Mansfield Tigers at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. The win extends Highland Park's remarkable postseason run and sets up a championship showdown next weekend.

Senior quarterback Jake Morrison threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns, while running back Carlos Mendez added 128 rushing yards and two scores to lead the Scots' balanced offensive attack. The victory marks Highland Park's first state championship appearance since 2018, when they captured the Division I title.

"This team has worked incredibly hard all season, and seeing them execute at this level on such a big stage is truly special," said Highland Park head coach Randy Allen. "Our seniors have shown tremendous leadership, and our underclassmen have stepped up when we needed them most."

The Scots dominated from the opening drive, scoring on their first three possessions to build a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. Morrison connected with wide receiver Tommy Chen for a 42-yard touchdown pass just four minutes into the game, setting the tone for what would become a decisive victory.

Highland Park's defense, anchored by linebacker Marcus Williams and defensive back Anthony Rodriguez, forced four turnovers and held Mansfield's high-powered offense to just 287 total yards. The Tigers entered the game averaging 38.2 points per contest but struggled against the Scots' disciplined defensive scheme.

The championship run has energized the Highland Park community, with fans lining Mockingbird Lane and Preston Road throughout the week showing their support. Local businesses along Knox Street have displayed "Go Scots" signs, while the team's practice facility near the intersection of Hillcrest Avenue and University Boulevard has drawn crowds of supporters.

"The whole community is behind these boys," said longtime Highland Park resident Margaret Thompson, whose grandson plays on the junior varsity team. "You can feel the excitement everywhere you go, from the grocery store to the coffee shops on Preston Center. Even the auto shops and service businesses are getting involved – I saw Faith Low Price Auto Glass put up a huge banner supporting the team."

The Scots will face the Aledo Bearcats in the state championship game next Saturday at 7 p.m. at AT&T Stadium. Aledo defeated College Station 28-21 in the other semifinal matchup. The Bearcats bring a 14-1 record and their own championship pedigree, having won state titles in 2020 and 2021.

Highland Park Independent School District announced that tickets for the championship game will go on sale Monday morning at 9 a.m. through the school's athletic department. The district expects high demand, as the Scots' semifinal game drew an estimated 3,000 Highland Park supporters to Arlington.

The team will return to practice Monday afternoon at their facility on Euclid Avenue as they begin preparation for what could be a historic championship victory.
